Scheme: Academy secondary school – Gas boiler to heat pump upgrade
Prior to Hysopt modelling: proposal to install 1MW high temperature heat pumps, capex circa £1.5m
What did Hysopt modelling prove?
Installation of high temperature heat pumps at high flow temps would double energy costs vs existing gas system, due to very poor seasonal efficiency (SCOP <2);
Optimisation of the existing heat distribution system and taking advantage of oversizing in current installation allowed operation at lower flow temperatures, allowing “standard” temperature heat pumps to be installed;
Optimisation of the control strategy could reduce peak demands further still;
Results in lower upfront capex costs (£800k saving) and running costs on a par with existing gas boilers, due to much higher heat pump seasonal efficiency
Cost per tonne CO2 reduced from >£750/tCO2 to <£250/tCO2
